Course Description

Financial Markets encompass a wide and complex field of specialisation. This Independent Module on Financial Markets with a duration of 1.5 hours,  serves as an attempt toward a simplified and overarching view of the role of Financial Markets within a broader economy.

We delve into the concepts of Equity/Stock Markets and some short-term instruments traded on the Money Market before diving into fixed-income securities traded on the Bond Market. Here we explore bond pricing, yield calculations and the inverse relationships between interest rates & bond prices, as well as between a bond price & its yield.

We further discuss the significance of a share price, before shifting our focus toward the misuse and exploitation of specific financial derivative instruments, which were instrumental in the build-up to the US housing bubble burst and the subsequent 2007/8 global financial crisis.
